Description

In 2011, KNR started off with its own series of hydraulic manipulators, developing the HYDRA-MP1, which can lift a payload 110% of its own weight and maneuver the payload with 5 degrees of freedom. The HYDRA-MP2 was developed in 2012. It has 6 degrees of freedom, and uses new technology to minimize hydraulic fluid lines. Then in 2014, we completed development of the HYDRA-MP3, which also has 6 degrees of freedom, and no exterior fluid lines.

Compared to motorized robotic arms, the HYDRA-MP series not only has a much higher payload for its weight, but also has more mechanical stiffness and better precision, due to the use of hydraulic rotary actuators. The construction of a module is relatively simple, requiring only the inclusion of more actuators and more links for more degrees of freedom. By controlling torque with pressure sensors on each piece, it’s also possible to have good compliance control, even though it’s a hydraulic system. KNR has developed two controllers. First, the best performance can be achieved for any given purpose using the DSP controller (TMS320C28346). Another controller has been developed for use with LabView using a shared library (*.so) file, allowing it to be used with Linux by developers for research purposes.

We are always doing our best to develop and implement manipulators with optimal degrees of freedom for assorted applications, and we are currently working on a “smart” actuator, which would combine the controller, sensors, servo valve, hydraulic fluid lines, and cables all into one unit.

Hydraulic manipulator is a key component in tasks requiring waterproof such as disaster management and offshore plant construction. HYDRA-UW series is a robot arm develop to remotely operate underwater and a deep-sea version of the arm designed to attach to a Work Class ROV is under development.

The current 7DOF hydraulic robot arm (HYDRA-UW3+) is a heavy-load manipulator (full reach lift 124kgf, maximum lift 300kgf) that can operate 500msw underwater. UW3+ is continuously enhancing in reliability through performance and durability tests, aiming to work in 2500msw environment.

Unlike the previous models, all of the external hydraulic hoses have been integrated directly into the inner frames of the robot, increasing the manipulability and hydraulic stiffness by minimizing the fluid elasticity from the hoses. Also, high-pressure resistive hydraulic servo-valves, low-level controller (HAC), and kinematics solver (LCU) are included in the system.

Further research and development of highly reliable robot arms for tasks in extreme environments will be continued and applications in various fields are expected.
